NRC SCHEDULES MEETING, VOTE ON WASTE CONFIDENCE RULE

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission appears poised to deal with the issue of waste confidence during the coming week, scheduling a "discussion/vote" on the final waste confidence rule for June 30. The NRC published proposed changes to the waste confidence rule that would largely detach the finding from the existence and operation of the Yucca Mountain repository, and the rulemaking has been stalled since the election of President Barack Obama, whornhas effectively shuttered the high-level waste repository. Former NRC Chairman Dale Klein, now an NRC commissioner, said earlier this year that he would still like to proceed with a waste confidence rulemaking process, although he said the Commission would have to examine the impacts of the Obama Administration's decision on the proposed rule.
