Recycling spent nuclear fuel was again a hot topic for the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future earlier this month, as a Commission subcommittee heard that while the process may not be attractive now, it could be an important option in the future. At an Oct. 12 meeting of the Reactor and Fuel Technologies subcommittee in Washington, most agreed with forecasts that uranium would remain relatively abundant and be able to adequately supply fuel for years, giving few economic incentives for reprocessing. However, some panelists brought up uncertainties that may make recycling spent fuel a more attractive alternative in the future.
