TVA PLANS FOR NUCLEAR TO OVERTAKE COAL IN ITS PORTFOLIO

The Tennessee Valley Authority predicts its nuclear expansion will continue, potentially overtaking coal as its leading electricity source as it shutters a portion of its coal fleet, according to a new draft of TVA's integrated resource plan. The findings support the company's FiscalrnYear 2011 operating budget issued last month, in which TVA bolstered funding for the completion of two nuclear reactors and planned to shutter nine coal-fired units. The draft plan, released Sept. 14, forecasts possible options to "help guide efforts to meet regional electricity needs over the next 20 years," updating TVA's 1995 integrated resource plan, Energy Vision 2020. "TVA's Integrated Resource Plan process is a rigorous one that is supportive of TVA's renewed vision and will guide the corporation as it leads the region and the nation toward a cleaner and more secure energy future, relying more on nuclear power and energy efficiency and less on coal," Van Wardlaw, TVA's executive vice president of Enterprise Relations, said in a statement.
