WITH HUGE TASK AHEAD, BLUE RIBBON PANEL LOOKS TO CLARIFY ITS MISSION

Members of the newly appointed Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future got down to the business of their charge during their inaugural meeting last week, but it was obvious throughout the two-day meeting in Washington, D.C. that the group will have to work hard to harmonize their ideas about what exactly that charge includes. Members noted time and time again that the task before them-to study and recommend alternatives for management of the country's spent nuclear fuel-is not an easy one. Using words like daunting, challenging, complex and difficult, they attempted to hash out and clarify their mission through interactions with Energy Secretary Steven Chu, government officials and each other, although at times the perceptions about that mission became clouded by the seemingly interminable number of issues that could be connected to nuclear power.
