DOE WILL PULL YUCCA APPLICATION, PROGRAM TO BE SHUT DOWN

The Obama Administration sounded the death knell for the Yucca Mountain repository program with its Fiscal Year 2011 budget request released earlier today, asking Congress to zero out funding for the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management and announcing plans to withdraw the repository license application from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission within the month. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Feb. 1 that DOE filed a motion to "stay" proceedings on the NRC license application before the end of the day. The budget request for FY11 does include a total of $55 million for certain activities associated with the waste program, but that funding is distributed between the Office of Nuclear Energy budget and the program management budget.
