Burning issues

Fire protection issues under discussion in the US include fire safety assessment programmes and rulemaking. Technical issues such as fire-induced circuit failures are also under consideration. The US Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) is working with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to address several important fire protection issues affecting nuclear plants. Some of these issues are very technical, for example fire-induced circuit failures. Others cover wide-ranging discussion of programmes for protection assessment and inspection. Finally, new fire protection rule-making and guidance documents offer both opportunities and challenges for plant fire protection programmes. Constructive interactions between the NRC and the nuclear industry are paving the way for more effective regulation in these areas.
