Henry Waxman, a Californian Democrat, has been elected as chairman of the influential US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, ousting Michigan Democrat John Dingell from a post he had held for a total of 16 years. Energy and Commerce is the oldest, and one of the most important, of the US House of Representatives standing committees, with energy and climate change included in its remit. It is likely to play a central role in passing high priority legislation when Congress reconvenes under the leadership of Barak Obama in January 2009.
