Ten more years for Doel 1&2

The Belgian government has approved a plan to extend the lifespan of Electrabel's Doel 1&2 reactors by ten years to 2025. The units, both 454MW pressurised water reactors, have been in operation since the mid-1970s. They were originally due to close in February and December 2015, respectively, after 40 years of operation, and were set to become the first two units to shut down under Belgium's plans to phase out nuclear power by 2025. Plant operator Electrabel applied for a 10-year licence extension for Doel 1&2 in 2012. The government approved this in December, but it will also require approval by the Belgian nuclear regulator, the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC).
