Life begins at 50 as US looks to new nuclear horizons

In 2003 we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the commercial nuclear industry in the United States. In his historic 'Atoms for Peace' speech in 1953, President Dwight D. Eisenhower envisioned not just a US, but a world wide nuclear energy industry, and that has come to pass. After half a century, the nuclear industry is building a bright future, worldwide, on a foundation of efficient and reliable current performance. Nuclear energy plays a vital role in America's diverse portfolio of electricity sources. Our 103 nuclear plants provide electricity to one in every five US homes and businesses. Around the world, 441 nuclear plants now produce 17% of the world's electricity. There are 33 more plants under construction.
