1. There is considerable public interest in the Government's energy review, where recommendations are expected during the Summer and many industrialists are stressing the need for a nuclear contribution to energy production. It is widely accepted that there is no simple solution to Britain's energy problems. Currently, some 20% of the country's electricity is generated by nuclear plants and another 33% from coal-fired stations. By 2020, decommissioning could reduce nuclear's share to 7%. Coal's contribution could fall to 16%, if Britain keeps in line with the European Union's directive on emissions.
