The significance of identifying and implementing sustainable forms of energy is underlined by the following considerations: 1. The world's population has now exceeded six billion, and is projected to grow to around ten billion by 2050. 2. Developing nations currently account for more than 80% of the world's population, but consume only about one-third of the world's energy (primary energy-use per capita in the USA is currently 330GJ/year, compared with 40GJ/ year in sub-Saharan Africa). 3. World demand for primary energy is expected to increase by 60% over the next 25 years, and electricity demand is expected to be double over the same period. As a result, total CO_2 emissions are expected to increase by around 70%.
