The European dimension of advanced nuclear reactor and fuel cycle research

Around 35% of our electricity in the European Union is generated by nuclear power stations, representing not only considerable operating experience but also providing a tribute to the successful research and technology developments which have supported those operations over many decades. The value of nuclear research and development in a European context was recognised as long ago as 1957 through the provisions of the Euratom Treaty, which continues to provide five-year targeting specific areas not already covered by the industry's own activities.
