The BNES/INucE NW Branches' 61st Annual Dinner was held on Thursday, May 15th, 2008, and nearly 700 people attended this ever-increasingly popular event. The Guest-of-Honour and Keynote Speaker was Malcolm Wicks, the Minister for Energy. In his keynote speech, reproduced after this report, the Minister congratulated the societies on the launch of the Nuclear Institute and the positive manner in which they supported the Government's intent to have a new tranche of nuclear power stations as a part of their balanced energy policy as set out in the Energy White Paper, which was currently proceeding through the parliamentary process, to ensure that the UK energy supplies were self-sufficient as well as being safe and low in carbon emissions. He concluded his address with a toast "to the Nuclear Societies".
