Western Branch -successful annual Bristol dinner

The Western Branch of the Nuclear Institute held its annual dinner at the Grand Hotel, Bristol, on 16 March 2011. There were 258 attendees and it was good to see some tables being taken by organisations who had not previously done so. The dinner was again organised by Western Branch Committee member David Smillie, of Babcock International Group. We started the evening with a minute of silence to remember those who had lost their lives in the Japanese tsunami and colleagues in Japan working to bring Fukushima to a safe condition. The Guest of Honour and main speaker was Richard Mayson, EDF Energy's Director of Planning and External Affairs for Nuclear New Build, who gave a thoughtful talk on the industry and on how change can occur when least expected - he was most entertaining in recounting his recent experiences on holiday overseas. Past President John Earp thanked Richard for his speech.
