Graduates entering the labour market today have a rough ride; they face more competition for jobs and there's a need from employers for ready-made experts who can hit the ground running; a vicious cycle for young people lacking experience in the workplace. So, if employers want experienced new entrants, isn't it time they got their hands dirty and offered more work experience? Or should young people be doing more themselves to gain work experience? Nuclear industry employers have for a long time promoted the industry as an exciting and secure career path, with many employers providing open days, careers information and a busy schedule of careers fairs and presentations at schools and colleges. And while this insight is highly valuable it doesn't always give young people the experience the employers actually seek. Young people say they feel unprepared in their route from education to work transition. According to the results of a survey undertaken by the Young Foundation, nearly one third of young people cite a lack of work experience as a key barrier to employment.
