In July 1951, after several years of experiments with marine applications for nuclear power, Congress authorized the US Navy to build a nuclear-powered submarine. The submarine was named after the fictional submarine in Jules Vernes' Twenty thousand leagues under the sea and was the first vessel to travel submerged under the North Pole on 3 August 1958.
