Fuelling Net Zero: The UK Advanced Fuel Cycle Programme (AFCP)

1.The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) £505 million Energy Innovation Programme (EIP) aims to accelerate the development of innovative clean energy technologies in the UK. Nuclear is one of six themes supported by the EIP from 2016 to 2021. 2.Part of the EIP nuclear theme, the Advanced Fuel Cycle Programme (AFCP) represents the largest UK public investment in future fuels and fuel cycle research and development (R&D) in a generation. 3.Led by the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and working with more than 90 UK organisations, AFCP is pioneering R&D into advanced fuels and sustainable fuel cycles to support the UK's ambition of achieving net zero by 2050. 4.With the necessity of new nuclear outlined in Government's Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, it is increasingly clear that net zero requires unprecedented expansion of nuclear talent and technologies. World-leading advanced fuel cycle capability will enable future nuclear deployment in the UK, jumpstarting the growing role of nuclear within the national decarbonisation strategy.
