FSA-WDM Submarine Optical Transmission Systems

We have developed a 10 Gbit/s ×4-channel FSA-WDM (Fiber Submarine transmission using in-line optical Amplifiers with Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system that can be applied to a currently installed fiber submarine system originally designed for single wavelength channel transmission. By replacing the terminal equipment, this WDM system can upgrade the transmission capacity from 10 to 40 Gbit/s/fiber within a reasonable cost without any change to the submarine optical repeaters and cable. This paper describes the design concepts and actual performance of the FSA-WDM submarine optical transmission system, which is now commercially available.
