DEVELOPMENT OF NETWORK EQUIPMENT AND OPERATIONS SYSTEMS FOR ATM BACKBONE NETWORK

With the recent spread of multimedia communications, including the Internet, the needs for various ATM services have rapidly increased. In response to these needs, network equipment and operations systems for the ATM backbone network have been developed as a common ATM infrastructure. Introducing these systems enables the existing separate networks for each service, such as ATM mega-link, frame-relay, and Open Computer Network (OCN),to be unified into be ATM backbone network. This should improve their cost-performance and flexibility. This paper presents the background of the development of these systems and describes their architectures.
