The effect of polyelectrolyte multilayer coating with and without the addition of silica on inkjet print quality, print water fastness and print rub resistance has been studied. Up to five polyelectrolyte layers were deposited with a surface sizing unit on an uncoated wood-free paper with intermediate drying. A desktop printer equipped with dye-based aqueous inks was used, and the print quality, ink drying behavior, water fastness and ink rub resistance were determined. It was found that the cationic-anionic polyelectrolyte multilayer coatings had only a small effect on the print density and print mottle, but that the addition of nanosilica significantly improved the print quality. The water fastness and wet rub resistance were improved by single and double coating of the cationic polyelectrolyte, but the further addition of cationic polyelectrolyte reduced the water fastness. The water fastness of the print on the cationic-anionic polyelectrolyte coatings, on the other hand, was better than that on the reference substrate, probably due to infiltration of the colorant into the coating layer.
