Japan-based start-up Spiber Inc, a venture business firm of Keio University, has developed a mass production process for artificial spider silk. In collaboration with Spiber, automotive parts manufacturer Kojima Press Industry has constructed a pilot plant to supply a monthly capacity of 100kg of the yarn this year. Spiber's process uses raw material originating from a microbiological protein which has the same components and characteristics of spider silk, but with a revised mirco-molecular arrangement to allow it to be used with other materials.
