Medical Barrier Nonwovens Market Demands Driven by Shift in Performance,Location and Cost Requirements

Medical barrier nonwovens (SMS, spunlace, wetlaid and films for nonwoven laminates) are primarily used in disposable surgical gowns, drapes and sterile tray wrap markets. The job of these end-use products is to prevent the potential of blood- and alcohol-borne pathogens from coming in contact with the surgical staff and to reduce small particle contamination of the surgical site from the surgical staff and environment. To meet these high-performance expectations of small particle, blood and alcohol repellency, the fabrics and end-use medical products must meet stringent tests by AAMI and European standards. In addition, they need to do this at an affordable cost. The end product cost is most influenced by the fabric cost and the converting labor cost.
