The 1994 U.S. figure-skating champi-onships were one of the most infamous sporting events in history, the sorry start to the Nancy and Tonya saga. A year later, Tonya Harding is an admitted felon, Nancy Kerrigan is the rare Olympic medalist who is ridiculed as much as revered and the national championships are desperately trying to get noticed. That's because it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish the real championships from the myriad skatefests already held this season. The '95 Nationals, which take place this week in Providence, R.I., follow the recent U.S. Open, North American Open Skating Championships, Ice Wars, Challenge of Champions, Gold Challenge and Rock 'n' Roll Skating Championships.
