To Israel's counterterrorism specialists, the bloody palestinian intifada looks like the good old days. Army troops regularly confronted stone-throwing youths in the occupied territories, but the occupiers also had things Palestinians needed: work permits, access to good medical care, tax breaks, permission to travel abroad. Arid they could always kick down a. suspect's door and haul him away for interrogation. The Shin Bet, Israel's internal-security force, made the most of the leverage, recruiting a huge network of informants that kept it abreast of terrorist plots by militants-some 5,000 snitches in Gaza alone, according to U.S. intelligence sources.
