Uncle sam wants to know what time you leave for work. Are you going to tell him? How about how many bedrooms you have, the size of last month's electric bill or whether you're living in sin? These kinds of questions have become part of the nation's numerical fabric in recent decades as the U.S. census has metasta-sized into something resembling a gigantic tabloid reporter. But as the landmark 2000 Census begins to take shape—with 51 questions proposed for the longest form—it has become the focal point of a battle over whether the Feds spend too much time and money poking around in our statistics.
