Deep in the Heart of Appalachia

All of rory ken-nedy's life, she'd been told that her father, Robert F. Kennedy, cared deeply about the poverty-plagued corridor of America known as Appalachia. The people there first moved the politician when he visited in 1964. A budding documentarian, Kennedy followed her father's footsteps to the mountains of Kentucky in 1996 and emerged with a complex and moving portrait of a resilient but embattled people. "American Hollow," which premieres on HBO on Nov. 29, has at its center the struggles of Iree Bowling, the matriarch of an extended mountain clan. The Bowlings lack the education and modern conveniences that many Americans take for granted, but are proud of their family ties and traditions. Newsweek's Corie Brown spoke recently with Kennedy about her film and her own family.
