摘要

Two lives" by janet malcolm is a curious book. It's not a biography or literary criticism but a document of intellectual obsession with Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas—and not just Malcolm's obsession but that of a small club of scholars who continue to parse the writings and doings of one of modernism's best-knowncouples. Stein, a self-proclaimed literary genius, is a writer no one reads anymore—but Malcolm is respectful, even as she describes her own slogs through the thicket of words. A longtime writer for The New Yorker (where chunks of this book first appeared), Malcolm has made a career of questioning the motives and ethics of reporters and biographers (see her book "The Journalist and the Murderer" and her study of Sylvia Plath). In "Two Lives," she again becomes a character in her own nonfiction, showing us her labors as researcher and interpreter, scrupulously combing the women's work, papers and other scholarship for insight into their lives and their identities.
