In 2000, sun microsystems billed itself as the "dot in dot.com," the firm whose technology powered the first generation of Internet firms. But when many of its customers went broke or pulled back during the bust, Sun's revenues fladined. Confronted by open-source software and the declining price of computers, Sun never quite recovered.
