Jim carrey is a funny man, but he may frighten the animals. It's a Monday morning on the set of "Ace Ventura 2" in Charleston, S.C. The crew has taken a cavernous General Dynamics hangar and converted it into a sound stage. Outside, there are high winds, a slanting rain and talk of tornadoes. This would be Hurricane Allison. Inside, there's a guy wearing Buddhist robes and motorcycle boots, preparing for a scene in which he'll scream for no real reason. This would be Hurricane Jim. It seems Ace Ventura has put his career as a pet detective on hold and trekked to Tibet, where he's seeking enlightenment and driving the monks crazy. In this scene, Ace meditates amid a sea of exotic birds and animals. Carrey rehearses his scream—in deference to a gag in "Dumb and Dumber," we'd call it the second most annoying sound in the world—and the animals hardly flinch. But during the actual take a crested touraco gets spooked and flutters around the set. "I freaked him out, huh''" says Carrey, 33. It won't be the last time. Asked to compare the excesses of "Ace 2" to the excesses of the original, the actor grins, "It's 10 times worse," he promises. "It's really, really sick." Carrey is beaming now. "It's my ticket to the gates of hell."
