It Looked Like Selling Mag-azines to teenage girls would be a piece of cake. Six years ago Seven-teen, YM and Teen magazine together were pulling in a whopping 6.3 million readers. With demographers forecasting the largest group of adolescents since the baby boom, that circulation number was only expected to grow. Since then, People, Cosmopolitan, Elle and Vogue eagerly rolled out Teen People, Cos-moGirl, Elle Girl and Teen Vogue. Now magazine executives are relearning what they must have forgotten since their junior-high days: there's no one more fickle than a teenage girl.
