The girl's name was Sally. She was 10 years old and had never had serious health problems. But when Dr. William Coleman met her last winter, she was irritable, withdrawn and plagued by stomachaches. Coleman, a pediatrician at the University of North Carolina's Center for Development and Learning, referred Sally to a therapist but there was no improvement. "I sensed something else was going on," he says. "People don't usually get depressed—boom—for no reason." So Coleman arranged to meet privately with the parents. "Is Sally's problem affecting your marriage?" he asked, suspecting it might be the other way around.
