Shortly after the New York Stock Exchange announced its plan last month to merge with the electronic trading firm Archipelago, John Thain, the CEO of the NYSE, met with some floor traders to answer their questions. They're an important audience, since these "seat holders" collectively own the NYSE, and the deal requires two thirds of their votes. The morning meeting grew testy as they peppered Thain with questions: won't moving to electronic trading mean floor specialists will lose their jobs? "If you believe that, you should sell your seat now and do something else," Thain replied, in an exchange confirmed by three traders and an NYSE adviser to Thain who didn't want to be quoted by name.
