Bill clinton is to politics what the gifted analyst and statistician Bill James is to baseball. James fans may resent the comparison, but the president has the same startling ability to view the game from 600 different angles. His campaign recently gave him a printout breaking down the 1992 election returns. Clinton insisted that in one state one of the percentages reflecting his vote tally was off by one tenth of one percent. It was really 46.5 instead of 46.4—something like that. He turned out to be right.
