The reality-based televi-sion mini-series "Presidential Debates" was off the air last weekend as creative consultants and script doctors worked feverishly to relaunch the show this week after initial tepid reviews. At Gore, the critics said, "won" the premiere on debating points, but his stagy off-camera sighs and pedantic demeanor left viewers cold. So, at a shark-research center in Florida, he was expected to listen with special care to a Yale-trained theater director, Michael Sheehan, who specializes in helping stiff, brainy politicians and CEOs come across on TV as pithy, charming, relaxed and memorable. "Sheehan is close to the operating table," said a top Gore insider.
