Pooralan greenspan. Not long ago, he was regarded by Wall Street, Washington and much of America and the world as a living god, thanks to a roaring economy and a soaring stock market. Not necessarily in that order. But these days Greenspan is starting to look more like a character in Jimmy Breslin's comic novel, "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight." The problem, of course, is that Greenspan is trying to drive down stock prices that he considers inflationary, but his verbal and interest-rate bullets seem to be hitting the wrong target. He's done great at shooting down Old Economy stocks but hasn't even winged the New Economy stocks that seem to be coining millionaires and billionaires on an almost daily basis. Which is why the Dow Jones industrial average closed Friday down 14 percent for the year, while the Nasdaq index has broken the 5000 barrier and is up 24 percent for the year.
