Erily calm, Steve Case and Gerald Levin are riding an elevator in a Manhattan skyscraper. Case, chairman of America Online, and Levin, his counterpart at Time Warner, chat amiably. Levin looks haggard, the effects of a cold and a grueling, nine-hour board meeting that ended late the previous night. As a New Year's resolution, he has just shaved his mustache for the first time in 35 years; his wife had never before seen his hairless face.
