摘要

Wallace Sutherland was studying mechanical engineering at Canterbury University when he took these photographs. He was a foundation member of the N Z Railway and Locomotive Society. In 1954 he and his family shifted to England to pursue his career, and he lived in that country for the rest of his life. Wallace died in 2001. Above: G97 arriving in Christchurch with a mixed train from Springfield in March 1939, under the watch of the crossing keeper. The locomotive was one of six rebuilt from the three earlier Beyer Garratts. Both classes were unpopular with crews. Below: A C class locomotive hauls the Saturday Darfield to Christchurch 'goods with car attached' through Middleton in October 1939. The carriage is interesting, a celestial roofed 'birdcage' car.
