Martinus is an Australian based company specialising in the design, supply, installation and maintenance of railway assets throughout Australia. For some years they have been providing turnout components for KiwiRail.They have been in operation for 14 years. They have a pending project in Queensland, building a railway to a coal mine, and need locomotives to run work trains during the construction period. The locomotives are needed in Queensland in August and with such a short timeframe they couldn't obtain locomotives in Queensland. They then turned to New Zealand, initially looking for four locomotives. After inspecting the spare DC locomotives stored at Hutt only two, 4571 and 4444, were considered suitable. The others would have needed a considerable amount of rust repair. 4571 and 4444 were sold to Martinus on an 'as is where is' basis. Hutt workshops staff have put the two locomotives back into running order, with both generators being overhauled in Hamilton. It is planned to rail the locomotives to Auckland in late April for shipment to Queensland. Martinus is also considering purchasing DC4014.
