Stuart and Chapman Ltd of Ross was one of the few real successes in New Zealand's indigenous timber industry and the company's extensive bush tramway was constructed and maintained to a high standard. However, like all sawmilling operations there were many difficult years.rnThe sawmilling partnership of Dave Stuart and John Chapman began at Seddon's Terrace, Rimu in 1899 with the building of a small sawmill capable of producing 3,000 board-feet a day. Within three years the partners had remodelled the mill so that output could be doubled.
