In the early years of the Railways Department, it was the controlling authority of several wharves throughout New Zealand. One such wharf was at Mount Rex and, like most wharves the Railways Department was responsible for, Railways' management considered it a liability rather than an asset. The primary reason for Helensville's development as a town was its role as a transhipment point for goods and passengers. It was a transport hub, located strategically on the Kaipara River between Auckland and the vast navigable reaches of the Kaipara Harbour.
