Over the past couple of months life for KiwiRail's senior executives and directors must be like living in a fish bowl with politicians from all parties, journalists, media commentators and industry lobbyists all taking a swipe at the rail operator's performance, or perceived lack of performance. There are plenty of issues to express an opinion about, such as poor availability of the DL locomotives, braking problems on Chinese-built wagons, sale of Hillside Workshops, rotting timber sleepers, layoffs of track maintenance staff, selling of TranzScenic, continued operation of Capital Connection, and decisions on reopening the Napier - Gisborne line. All of these issues must be a distraction for KiwiRail executives as they appear to be continually fighting fires rather than developing a quality railway.
