The New Zealand Railways Magazine during 1926 featured a series of articles on the Westinghouse brake. They were written by R.E. Robertson, N Z Railway's Westinghouse Brake Engineer. But who was this man? Where did he come from, and how did he get to that position?Richard Robertson served an engineering apprenticeship at the North Eastern Railway's Gateshead-on-Tyne Works in northern England. The North Eastern Railway Company was one of the few English long-term users of the Westinghouse Brake, using this device after trials in 1875.
