A Turntable Mishap at Port Chalmer

On 15 February 1965, the NZ Railways Way and Works Branch chose to change the throw over points lever at Port Chalmers, which gave access to the 55-foot turntable, with a Wynne Williams spring points lever. The alternative to the turntable line was continuation along the'short loop'which ran opposite the old stone railway station to the weighbridge and George Street Wharf. At that time, the Port Chalmers station yard was very cramped and at busy times visibility was restricted by rakes of wagons coming and going from the wharves. In addition carriages for the suburban trains were parked wherever space was available.
