Our 3'6" (1067mm) rail track gauge originated in continental Europe and came to us via England. The English standard gauge of 4'8V2" (1435mm) was exported worldwide from England by George and Robert Stephenson through their consulting, engineering and locomotive building work. They foresaw the benefits that could arise from the use of a common, standard rail gauge.
