In February 1996, Barry Prior of Hamilton wrote to the then Observer editor, Tom McGavin, giving some of his youthful recollections of the identification letters carried on the Auckland shunting locomotives in the early 1950s. He requested that a suitable article on this topic appear in Observer. As they say in the Mainland cheese advertisement, these things take time - but finally here we are!
