Books written on railways, particularly in the second half of the 20th century, tended to ignore the people aspects of railways. Some authors would go to great lengths to detail the performance of a locomotive on a particular trip without giving any credit to shed staff who maintained the locomotive or the skill of the driver and footplate staff whose skills got the best performance from the machine. Railways were, and still are, a significant employer of people and little has been written on the people aspects of rail.
