Down at the Station

KiwiRail is using its mechanical repair depot at Picton for the repair of 500 IAB container wagons. Twelve staff from the Chinese manufacturer are based in Picton and the work is covered undertheir warranty agreements. Picton was chosen as the location to have the work done as most wagons pass through the station on a regular basis. The work started at the end of June and is expected to take eight months to complete. The main focus of the work will be to adjust the underframe to reduce the camber of the wagon deck, which currently makes loading of some 40ft containers difficu and replace some items which have not been performing well, such as braking systems. These changes were incorporated into the design of the second generation IH wagons.
