The Changing Face of the Paekakariki Line 1885-1963

David Hart has been a resident of Australia for a number of years but spent his childhood in Porirua. He reviews the history of the line and shares his recollections of unusual workings. The first railway between Wellington and the Manawatu was built by private enterprise. The Wellington & Manawatu Railway (WMR) Company's single track line was opened between its Thorndon Quay terminus and Paremata on 24 September 1885, passing through the villages of Ngaio Gorge, Khandallah, Johnsonville, Tawa Flat and Porirua.
