As from Monday 20 July the Auckland commuter network became fully serviced by electric multiple units. Electric trains will now operate as far as Swanson on the Western Line and as far as Papakura on the Southern Line. This is the final stage of the electric train roll-out which started operating on the Onehunga Line in 2014. Buses will transport passengers between Swanson and Waitakere, and diesel hauled trains will operate between Papakura and Pukekohe. In the last year 13 million passenger trips were made on the commuter trains compared with 1.1 million in 1983. The redundant diesel multiple units and coaches have been parked on unused sidings at Helensville and Taumarunui while their disposal is arranged. While in storage the rolling stock has been plastic wrapped, with security guards employed to prevent vandalism.
