The New Zealand Herald of Monday 1 June contained a Letter to the Editor from Derek Mills of Waihi. It started with, In the latest N Z Railway Observer magazine, it is reported that KiwiRail is considering scrapping electrification of the main trunk railway between Palmerston North and Hamilton and using diesellocomotives. The letter then discusses the writer's opinions on the merits of electric traction and concludes with - If this decision goes ahead, it would be a very large backward step for KiwiRail. It is very humbling to note that items featured in this magazine make it into the pages of New Zealand's major newspaper.
